CHECKING IN – HOTEL MARTINI, VERONA

With its summer opera festival, the Romeo and Juliet connections and a very rich historical heritage stretching back millennia, there is no disputing the fair city of Verona its place on the must-visit list.

Evidently, finding a place to stay that won’t break your budget can be a daunting task. For a very respectable deal in June this year, I found the Hotel Martini. This in good time for the festival season, which was soon to be under way. A deal of €62 a night was a great fit especially considering the location as well.

LOCATION

The Hotel Martini is situated little more than a 5-10 minute walk away from the main Porta Nuova Station. This, very suitable as almost equal distance between the station and the city centre. The latter less than a mile away! Very nice walking distance between Verona’s top attractions. Also worth noting the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi, home of FC Hellas Verona, which the other team Chievo Verona share, is a further 10-minute walk away. But not too near the hotel so no need to worry about noisy match days! Though not too far if you are keen to cheer on the Gialloblu! Moreover, even if close to a busy road it is nicely concealed behind it and traffic noise was never an issue. Overall, it was in a slightly concealed spot overlooking a tributary of the Adige.

ROOMS

Admittedly my room may not have been the most spacious but it was suitable and effective for my needs as a solo traveller. A very welcoming slogan took pride of place on the wall, making you feel instantly at home. There are times when I can get a bit cynical when I see so-called motivational quotes, especially for something like Pinterest. But the reminder that we are all human after all, guests or staff is the nice bit of emotional reassurance that is always appreciated. The sort that kind of puts you at ease if any negative thoughts suddenly occur.

With my luggage, finding a convenient spot to store without getting too much in my way wasn’t easy. But the desk area was a sufficient enough workspace, so that was all fine by me. There was no wardrobe, or at least a closed-door wardrobe, but a mounted space for clothes and hangers for coats. If anything, the best place for bag storage without running the risk of tripping up!

Bathroom may appear small at first glance but the bidet is a useful addition. Are they something of an Italian trend? Simple yet effective. Toiletries, towels and linen are indeed changed daily. The shower may seem a bit narrow but I can assure you it’s all fine. The super-cool air conditioning worked a breeze, no pun intended there! Certainly an essential in the scorchio June temperatures, and there is something about the sound of air-con blowing that soothes me to sleep. All the essentials are there and that is all that matters. As long as you are not expecting the Ritz and a multiple selection of soaps then you’re fine.

AMENITIES AND FACILITIES

Hotel Martini is blessed with a large breakfast choice for sure. Cooked breakfast as well as your selection of dairy foods and cakes and cereals too. Also on a clear day, the outside seating is a welcome option. Just hope it isn’t too breezy! Just be wary of that as it would be no fun at all if all your coffee and breakfast gets blown away. A gluttonous selection for you to help yourself to a big breakfast alright! Get your four or five course breakfast to set you up for the rest of the day. This is what I love as I am filled up until the sun goes down!

Rest of the day, a nice laid back social place to hang out maybe with something to eat or drink. Do note that it is a breakfast only property as far as meal service goes. Although beverages are always available 24/7 either at the bar or a self-service refrigerator cooler. As you can see in the above picture, there is a tennis court in view. Although not part of the Hotel Martini, to my knowledge, the option is there to you. I do hear there is also a gym on the ground floor though I did not get round to using it.

ATMOSPHERE AND AMBIENCE

The hotel really did meet my expectations in regards to the three star status and I was very pleased. A clean and comfortable room to rest in with zero disturbances plus a filling breakfast float my boat nicely. Obviously do not expect anything to be super flashy and ultra modern but I think if you know me by now that is not an essential requirement. We have here the good old fashioned keys to your rooms as opposed to the electronic versions. That is something I kind of prefer to a hotel. Don’t know why but it just feels more homely. It was very clean in all corners. Rooms, corridors, elevator, couldn’t ask for more.

I must also extend a great deal of thanks and appreciation to the staff. The reception is a 24-hour service, someone always there if you have any concerns even in the early hours of the morning. Breakfast waiters were impeccable and always provided service with a smile. Reception likewise, who are also always willing to help and book taxis to the airport of you need.

Do remember that, as with most Italian cities, you will get a small city tax added to your bill. But let’s be honest, that is hardly an issue.

Hotel Martini is like your more old-school and no-gimmicks hotel but with all the essentials you need. Yes, I think I will come back and stay again next time.
